sETTING THE STAGE since 1844

shaping the City’s Performing Arts.

The Hong Kong Players can trace its history all the way back to 1844 when the Amateur Dramatic Society (ADC) or AmDram Club as it was sometimes known, was established during the very early years of Hong Kong’s development. Back then there wasn't even a theatre to perform in. It took several false starts and different performance halls before Hong Kong's theatrical venues were finally established. After WWII the ADC was resurrected as the HK Stage Club, and in 1991 the Garrison Players and HK Stage Club joined forces to become what we know today as the HK Players.

The importance of BEING theatrICAL!

This means that Hong Kong Players predates many of Hong Kong’s other famous early establishments such as HSBC, The Hong Kong Football Club, and even the Foreign Correspondents Club. From its establishment in 1844, the club first flung open its curtains to the wider public in 1860 with a performance of Still Waters Run Deep, and has been performing almost annually ever since, reflecting the spirit of this great city and its effervescent international community. The traditional Christmas Panto has always been at the forefront of what we do: The Hong Kong Amateur Dramatic Club put on the first Grand Christmas Pantomime entitled "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" as far back as 1889.
